Just Outside the Glass

click to enlarge! This new space is terrifying to me, and it is also a great, great curiosity. That's because it's not just a website in the old way we used to think of websites ... oh, no my friends, it is not.
It's more of an experiment, in the way that those dried space monkeys in a glass are an experiment. Not that I ever had space monkeys; they were something you bought from the back of a comic book and I never read comic books very much as a kid. Plus, we were poor and I would have had to play sick and stay home from school to ambush the mailman before he got to our house and then I would have had to hide the thing the whole time I tried to enjoy its bubbling magic, and hiding a glass of fomenting monkeys away from my mother in my room was not that easy.
I'd link you right up to the sightings report in question so you can post your comments, but right now I don't know how to do that. Never fear -- we will learn to navigate this space soon enough and build roads and landmarks. Right now, it's virgin snow. Trek on.
But you would have keep watch once you applied the water if you wanted to see the wonder and/or avoid a huge mess. This site is like that. Within the confines of a generous space, we (Lesley mostly; let's be clear) are dribbling in bits of sightings, scary stories, unusual moments ... rants, raves, and requests ... and each and every part of this thing comes with that handy comments button, which is where the magic comes in.
We just don't know how it's going to grow or what shape it might take or what kind of space it might grow up to be. That's up to you -- the fluid you that will step in and stir things around here. You might be asked to become a guest blogger and your words might catch fire. You might have a sighting tonight and post it to the discussion forum. You get the picture. It's a marvel that we have a tool like this: so easy to just hit a button and write.
So, that's what I've been doing lately -- peeking in the glass, basically. This photo? Isn't it amazing? A reader sent it a few months back right when it happened. There, in the snow outside his window, his security cam captured ... something. What do you think it is? There will be those among you who can totally answer that question. Of that, I have no doubt. Is it an alien, a mirage, a bend of the light? Check it out.

You are a lucky lucky girl. Seriously, I wish someone would take a photo of what you really get. It's one of life's great mysteries. I hope you didn't eat them.
You can find the sightings report here - http://ufomagazine.squarespace.com/sightings/2008/4/30/alien-photo.html
BTW, I finally after months of trying talked someone in my family into getting me sea monkeys when I was a kid and I was very disappointed. They were just little tiny shrimps. They didn't smoke pipes or doing anything that it showed them doing on the package. :)
They are way too tiny to eat. You practically need a magnifying glass to even see them. They don't stay alive long either or at least mine didn't.
But what a brilliant business idea. I can't believe I wanted a toy that you'd need a microscope to see. How very Flann O'Brien.
You didn't wait long enough, Lesley. Here they are:
Wow
There's a movie. It says they live for two years!
I must have killed the poor things because I don't think they even lived a month. If I were Catholic I think I would need to go to confession now.
We're talking about sea monkeys now? My Mom told me it was the rage while
she was growing up and every kid then wanted one (I mean, some).
But aren't they supposed to be a unique species of brine shrimp, known by the scientific name of Artemia NYOS. Since a hybrid have been developed these amazing creatures can now grow larger and live longer than any "natural" variety of brine shrimp.
And Mrs. Birnes is right, thanks to new computer-driven processing technologies, non-toxic chemicals, twice as many Sea-Monkeys instantly hatch, grow larger and live longer to about 2 years in your tank.
Ah,the wonders of science and technology....:)
