The more I think about the historical accounts, the more I think that the key to solving the coming of the UFOs concerns the founding of the United States of America on July 4, 1776, and the astonishing events that happened to a 14-year-old farm boy named Joseph Smith who lived near Palmyra, New York, during the years from 1820 to 1827. This was soon after the founding of the American Republic, and this nation was founded on Christian principles so as to involve the new knowledge revealed to young Joseph Smith. According to the accounts of Joseph Smith (1805-1844) and a close associate named Orson Pratt (cited in the 1975 book by Elden J. Watson called THE ORSON PRATT JOURNALS), young Joseph went out into the woods to pray. He happened to look up and saw a brilliant object in the clear sky that magnified and then descended and lit the branches of nearby trees and landed on the ground.

Joseph said he was overcome by some powerful energy source and fainted. When he came to, he saw two brilliant personages who stood in the air. One of the personages spoke and pointed to the other and said the other was His Beloved Son (Jesus Christ). Joesph said he was given advanced information concerning the future. A space messenger named Moroni came down and went up in a white tube and visited young Joseph on each September 21-22 of the years from 1823 to 1827. Joseph said he was told about an engraved book of gold plates that concerned a group of Hebrews who had fled from Old Jerusalem around 600 B.C. when the city was invaded.

They migrated for years along the east shore of the Red Sea to modern-day Arabia and Oman. They discovered a round metal ball that gave them directions and built a ship so as to sail the ocean to the western shores of Central America. After a series of wars apparently covering great distances, the last survivor named Moroni buried the metal plates in a nearby hill. On September 21,22, 1827, Joseph Smith and his wife Emma recovered the book of metal plates from Hill Cumorah near Palmyra and translated the "reformed Egyptian" characters into contemporary English by means of the Urim and Thummim found with the plates. The account was published in Palmyra as THE BOOK OF MORMON in 1830 with the printed testimonies of eleven witnesses who said they saw and hefted and examined the engraved gold plates.

This is an astonishing story. Today the Mormon Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) is creating tools on You-Tube and Facebook to enlighten people about Joseph Smith and his 1820-1827 experiences and the 13 million Mormon members around the world who believe what Joseph Smith said and wrote and then published in the 1830 book. Mormon followers have built a stone monument and visitor's center and pageant to the memory of Joseph Smith on Hill Cumorah near Palmyra, New York.
