AURORA, Texas — A century-old legend of aliens in Wise County could become part of history.

University of North Texas researchers are analyzing pieces of unsual metallic objects to see if they could have come from a UFO.

Some people believe the metal came from a spacecraft that crashed in Aurora back in 1897.

The History Channel program "UFO Hunters" recently made the discovery while searching in a cemetery.

Because of an agreement with the network, UNT won't reveal what they determined after examining the evidence, so you'll have to watch the show when it airs in the fall.

A half-century before Roswell, Texans were talking about the silver "airship" that supposedly crashed into a windmill in 1897 and whether the pilot inside might have been a Martian.

A crew from the History Channel show UFO Hunters will try to dig up at least half of the real story this weekend.

On Saturday, workers were scheduled to unseal a long-covered water well where the windmill’s owner supposedly dumped crash debris. On Monday, crews plan to use radar imaging to examine the pilot’s Aurora Cemetery grave.

County historian Rosalie Gregg is certain what they’ll find.

"Nothing," she said Friday from the Wise County Heritage Museum in Decatur.

"It’s a waste of their time. It was all a hoax. But some people just like the idea of UFOs."

On April 17, 1897, an Aurora merchant spun a alien yarn that was out of this world.

International interest in little green men was sparked after it was reported earlier this month that a police helicopter had almost been involved in a collision with a flying saucer while waiting for landing clearance at the Ministry of Defence’s base in St Athan, Vale of Glamorgan.

The alleged incident saw the whole of Wales gripped by extraterrestrial excitement, prompting the phone lines in the office of Media Wales to jam as floods of readers rang in to tell of similar experiences with strange sights in our skies.

Now hit American investigative show UFO Hunters is looking for people who may have witnessed the events on or around June 8 to take part in a programme for its next series, due to begin filming in August.

“After the news of the incident over St Athan broke it went all over the world and the team behind UFO Hunters were straight on the phone to me asking for help find possible witnesses to that and other unexplained incidents,” said Philip Mantle, 50, of UFO DATA magazine who is working as a consultant for the upcoming Wales-based episode.

In March 1994, UFOs were reported speeding along the shoreline, leaving police and witnesses scratching their heads in wonder. The phenomenon was even caught on National Weather Service radar and recorded on a call to a 911 operator.

Now, 14 years after the headlines have faded, the phenomenon is once again about to be thrust into the national spotlight.

This fall, the sighting -- witnessed by residents in Muskegon and Ottawa counties -- will be the topic of UFO Hunters, a History Channel series that gives extraterrestrial encounters a primetime TV treatment.

The show's stated mission: Separate "fact from fallacy."

There's no denying the fact that something strange, even extraordinary, happened in West Michigan that cold spring night.

And Kevin Barry, who's producing the episode, is confident the public is still hungry for details.

"Everybody loves the idea of investigating UFOs," said Barry, a Michigan native who graduated from Wayne State University with a master's degree in film. "It subverts everything (people) have been taught and everything we believe."

Some witnesses aren't sure what to believe about the lights they saw hovering in the sky.

"It was late, about 9 p.m., when I saw it — and it was there for a good half-hour," said Pravda, who lives in the township off U.S. 31 near M-45. "I was looking out my kitchen window out in the backyard, and saw four lights at tree level. You think plane or helicopter, but I realized quickly that it wasn't."

Whatever Cindy saw was called into the 911 dispatch centers by at least four other residents in Allegan and Ottawa counties.

Transcripts from the Ottawa County Dispatch Center show callers referred to an object with "at least four lights ... flashing in sequence ... in a circular motion." Other witnesses said it was similar to a "string of Christmas lights."
